A little bit of Arabic

Hello,

I did not really do anything today worth blogging about. Because of this, I wanted to write about different Arabic phrases I have learned during the trip. I always enjoy learning the phrases because it reveals elements of the culture as well. I will write in Arabic and English. The Arabic is exclusively for Kelsey and Kate. For everyone else, just notice how beautiful Arabic is. I will also distinguish whether or not the phrase is written in Fusha or Jordanian Colloquial.

Also there will be some poetry thrown in the bunch. It is beautiful.

Fusha

أعطني حباً أعطك حبا

إنسان مجبول على الحب
Women are molded from love

لا توجل عمل اليوم إلى القد
Do not postpone the work of today until tomorrow

لا تصدّق كلّ ما يقالُ
Don't believe everything that is said to you

لا تخافي من المجهول
Do not be afraid of the unknown

إذا كان التكلم من فضة فالسكوت من ذهب
If talking is from silver, silence is from gold

لا جديد تحت الشمس
Nothing new under the Sun

لاخلاق تصنع الرجال
Morals make the man

ما أضيق القيش لولا فسحة الامل
How narrow life is without hope

الحاجة أم الاختراع
Necessity is the mother of invention

من لا يخطئ لا يفعل شيءاً
He who does not make a mistake does nothing (I wrote this on the top of my Fusha exam...hehe)

الوقاية خير من العلاج
Prevention is better than medicine

Now a poem

انا الهيب و قادتي المطر فمتى ساستعر؟
.و أنا يسيف الحرف أنتحر
.عاش الهيب
.و يسقط...يسقط المطر
I am the flame and my leaders are the rain. So when will I be ignited and when will I kill myself by writing to live. Long life the flame. The rain falls...and falls...
(about lack of freedom of speech)

فارس أحلامك
Knight of dreams (Prince Charming)
يسلوا أيديك
God save your hand  (an express for saying thank you. God save your hand for doing this for me and preserve you to do this again)
إيده طويلة
long hands (thief)
لسانك طويل
Long tonue (gossiper)

It's all from your hand (It's all your fault)

Random thought: I wonder if the MEIS department remembers who I am still. Kind of starting to worry that I will be forgotten since I have been away too long :(. The thought of this possibility makes me very very sad.

Talk to you later,
Natalie
